Western Cape and Eastern Cape Frontier War

  • Day 1:
The tour begins in Cape Town where you will be transferred from the airport to your hotel near the famous V&A Waterfront. Following a long overnight international flight we suggest you spend an afternoon of leisure, with perhaps a stroll around the V&A Waterfront area with it's many shops, restaurants and bars.
  • Day 2:
This morning we suggest a trip to Robben Island, where amongst many other political prisoners, former President Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for so many years. If the weather is suitable, a trip by cable car to the top of Table Mountain will be arranged during the afternoon. Alternatively we will visit Groot Constantia which, established in 1685, is the oldest wine farm in South Africa and a fine example of Cape Dutch architecture.
  • Day 3:
Your guide will collect you from the hotel this morning and escort you to visit the Castle of Good Hope including the museum, William Fehr Collection, the Officers Mess of either The Cape Town Rifles (Dukes), Cape Field Artillery or Cape Town Highlanders. Visits will also include the Chavonne Battery at the V&A Waterfront and Fort Wynyard where you can tour the museum, as well the Lion Battery to witness the noon gun firing.
  • Day 4:
Today we will include visits to either the Apostle Battery at Llandudno or the East and West Forts in Hout Bay, followed by a scenic drive by Chapman's Peak Drive to Cape Point. From there we move on to Simonstown to visit some of the many historic military buildings in the town and explain the town's development into a naval centre since VOC days. After lunch we travel to the naval dock yard as guests of the SA Navy. Visit available SA Navy ships, the dry dock and possibly a short trip to sea.
  • Day 5:
From your hotel you will be collected and proceed to Muizenberg to cover the Battle of Muizenberg and visit the Het Poshuis Museum. After lunch we visit the world renowned botanical gardens at Kirstenbosch. If we have been unable to visit Table Mountain during Day 2, we will have another attempt this afternoon.
  • Day 6:
A rest day with a tour of the nearby Winelands at Stellenbosch and Franschhoek to enjoy some wine tasting.
  • Day 7:
A local flight to Port Elizabeth and transfer to Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, followed by a tour of the old frontier area of Cape Colony.
  • Day 8:
Full day tour of Frontier War Battlefields, including the Battle of Grahamstown of 1819.
  • Day 9:
A day tour of Bathurst, an historic village significant in the 6th Frontier War and former capital of the 1820 Settler Settlement.
  • Day 10:
A rest day with the option to visit the nearby Addo Elephant National Park.
  • Day 11:
A local flight to Cape Town to connect with a flight home or enjoy an optional holiday extension in South Africa.
