Tour of KwaZulu-Natal - Transvaal War of Independence 1880 - 1881

  • Day 1:
    The tour begins in Durban and heads inland for Lang's Nek, the site of a British defeat during Jan 1881, before moving on to Schuinshoogte, another reverse for British troops in February of that year. Overnight near Newcastle.
  • Day 2:
    Today we visit Fort Amiel before moving to the battle of Majuba where the British forces under the command of Gen. Sir George Colley heavily defeated. This part of the tour will finish with a visit to the Volkrust Garden of Remembrance before returning to overnight near Newcastle.
  • Day 3:
    For those that wish to continue, the tour will look at events during the Anglo-Zulu war beginning with visits to Hlobane, Khambula and Ntombe Drift before we overnight at Vryheid.
  • Day 4:
    This morning we head on to Ondini and the battle of Ulundi where Lord Chelmsford dealt a mortal blow to the Zulu nation on 4 July 1879. In the afternoon we will enjoy a leisurely game drive through the nearby Hluhluwe / iMfolozi Park before we overnight at Ulundi at a delightful bush camp.
  • Day 5:
    Return to Durban to either connect with a flight home or enjoy a holiday extension in South Africa.
