The Anglo-Zulu War and The Anglo-Boer War combined

  • Day 1:
Following a short tour briefing, today we drive to Isandlwana for a full evaluation not only of the famous battle, but also the events that preceded it. We will also visit the site of Lord ChelmsfordÕs proposed new camp at Mangeni, the battlefield itself at Isandlwana and FugitivesÕ Drift. After a picnic lunch, continue to RorkeÕs Drift for an in depth description of the famous Defence, immortalized in the film Zulu. Overnight in Dundee.
  • Day 2:
After breakfast today we drive north through the old Boer capital of Vryheid (ÔFreedomÕ) and on to Ntshenteka Nek for a description of the Battle of Hlobane where the British force of the No 4 Column under Col. Sir Evelyn Wood suffered an embarrassing defeat by the combined efforts of inkosi Ntshingwayo kaMahole Khoza and his abaQulusi allies.
After a picnic lunch, we visit the subsequent battle at Khambule, where Wood fought off a determined attack by the Zulus the following day. This was the turning point of the Anglo-Zulu War and the Zulu army never fully recovered from this defeat. At the end of the day we return to Dundee and your overnight accommodation.
  • Day 3:
Time now to move on to cover the Anglo-Boer War, and starting from Dundee this morning, we will begin the day with brief stops at Talana and Elandslaagte, before moving after lunch to Ladysmith to cover CaesarÕs Camp and Wagon Hill. Overnight in Ladysmith.
  • Day 4:
TodayÕs tour will include Frere, ChurchillÕs Capture Site, Chieveley and Colenso. Overnight in Ladysmith.
  • Day 5:
Today, after breakfast and checking-out of your accommodation, we will visit the nearby Siege Museum in Ladysmith, before moving on to Spioenkop and Thukela Heights Battlefields.
The battlefield of Spioenkop is one of the most poignant battlefields, overlooking the lovely Spioenkop Game Reserve and dam. The infamous Òacre of massacreÓ which left no clear victors brings out the futility of war. We can enjoy a packed lunch at Spioenkop before moving on to the series of battles collectively known as Thukela Heights. Tour ends at around 16:00 in Ladysmith, when you say goodbye to your guide and you make your way home or continue with your holiday.
